OHOPE SPORTS CARNIVAL DRAWS LARGE CROWD

Favoured with glorious weather, the Ohope Progress League’s sports carnival on New Year’s Day was completely *successful, drawing a £l5O gate and providing a day of splendid entertainment for a crowd in holiday mood.

Motor-cycle and athletic events made the brightest spots in the programme, with keen interest shown m the baby show and the Highland dancing. Whakatane and Opotiki Pipe Bands were in attendance and gave an impressive marching display. Officials of the Progress League expressed their sincere appreciation of the work of those beach residents who helped, not only on the day but with the preparations and cleaning up afterwards. Though disappointingly few, the helpers work|ed with a will, and the preparations and organisation were a credit to them. ’ Children’s Events Results:— . 25yds flat, boys 4 and under: lan 1 Cartwright 1, Murray Jonasen 2, L. i Hitchens 3. • Girls: Lois Moyall 1, Kay Rhodes 2, P.
