JUSTICES & LEGAL MEN HONOR CLERK OF THE COURT
Heartfelt tributes to Mr Thomas Morgan, both as a Clerk of the Court and as a man were paid by district Justices of the Peace and legal practitioners at a social gathering at which Mr Morgan was the guest of honour on Wednesday evening.
Mr R. F. Smith, president of the Whakatane Law Society, opened proceedings, describing Mr Morgan as a zealous officer, conscientious in the discharge of his duties. As Registrar, he had been in touch with the lives of the people he served from the cradle to the grave, and had every reason to look back with pride upon the service he had given.
Speaking for Justices of the Peace, Mr W. M. Clark, having endorsed what Mr Smith said, added that not many Clerks of the Court would have given of their time and their money as generously as Mr Morgan had done to help poor unfortunates who passed through his hands to rehabilitate themselves. On behalf of the legaL fraternity and the Justices, Mr Smith presented Mr Morgan with a cheque with which to buy some lasting token of their regard. Other speakers were Messrs L. Buddie, B. S. Barry, C. S. Armstrong, C. A. Suckling, L. H. Brown, G. Otley, I. B. Gow. All emphasised Mr Morgan’s unfailing courtesy and helpfulness to all who had dealings with him. They paid feeling tributes to him as a friend, and wished both he and Mrs Morgan many years of happiness. Mr Morgan acknowledged their gift and remarks with deep sincerity, and added his thanks to the whole of this community for its kindness to him; and to his family. He said it gave both Mrs Morgan and himself great satisfaction that they were to spend their retirement here amongst their friends.
