Many Gay Costumes In Children’s Fancy Dress Parade
Children of all shapes and sizes dressed in costumes of all patterns and colours flocked to the children’s fancy dress 'parade at Whakatane yesterday. A gay variety of dresses showed that much work and ingenuity had been employed in preparing many of the costumes. It was a great, gaudy procession with a multitude of colour. If there had been a piper in front it could easily have passed for the happy band that followed the pied piper from Hamelin so many years ago. At the monument the procession halted and waited for Father Christmas, who was being rescued—or rather assisted—from the balcony of the Whakatane Hotel by. the Whakatane Fire Brigade. He accompanied the procession back to the clear space at the western end of the town where the judges of the costumes, Mr and Mrs W. Clark, Ohope, announced the winners. Each winner and runner-mp in each group received a cash prize, while each child received an ice cream and sweets.
