Longest Day The occurrence of' the summer solstice today makes the longest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere and the official beginning of summer. The meteorological summer began several weeks ago, but Whakatane’s share of it so far has been a meagre one. Red Cross Stall Last Friday’s Red Cross street' stall raised T 45. Posters produced by Messrs J. H. Duthie, Caisley and Master John Carter, helped in attracting attention, and those itn charge of the stall, expressed their appreciation of the efforts of the 1 honorary signwriters, as well as of' the generosity of the donors, of goods for sale. Fire Cuts Off Power v - Late Monday afternoon power was cut off from parts of Edgecumbe, Matata, Otakiri and Manawahe when a cross-arm on a transmission line, pole caught fire at the ba.ck of Tunnicliffe’s Mill, Edgecumbe. It was about an hour and a half before the service was restored, and the break caused a good deal of inconvenience to dairy farmers, as .it occurred during milking time.
