Red Cross Makes £4O Over £4O was made by the Red Cross Therapy stall held in the Whakatane Hospital grounds on Thursday. Many of the articles were not sold but it is hoped to be able to dispose of them at another stall to be held on Friday. Bus Signs In Borough An application' to erect signs showing bus stops on the various routes in the borough was received by the • Whakatane Borough. Council on Monday night, from Mr S. Cave, proprietor of the bus service running between Whakatane and Ohope. It was decided to grant permission to erect the signs, subject to the approval and supervision of the borough electrical engineer, Mr F. Lysaght. The signs will bear the notice, “Bus stops on request.” Trees Overhanging Street ' Overhanging trees growing along Domain Road, Whakatane, are to be .cut back, it was reported at the Whakatane Borough Council meeting on Monday • night. Complaints have been received by the council from a bus owner, who said that the overhanging branches • were ’ scraping the roof of his buses and damaging the paint work v It was stated that the trees were encouraging motorists and cyclists to keep to the centre of the road in order to escape them. Whodunnit? The other day the Beacon office received ,an envelope containing a half-crown, nothing else. It cost 8d to get possession of the 2/6, be- • cause the sender had overlooked the fact that the Post Office ■ requires letters containing cash to be registered. , But he carried his absentmindedness a lot further than that.* What account is the money to pay? Who sent it? Or is it intended as an anonymous donation to our workers’ Christmas Refreshment Fund? If the last, the boys acknowledge it with gratitude. Clearing Logs At Heads The suggestion that a working bee consisting of members of the Beautifying Society and various sports bodies combine and clear the logs away from the foreshore at the Heads was made at Monday night’s meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. It was stated' that it would take borough labour about four days to complete the work, but it could not be spared at present. Cr E. R. Dillicar, who is also president of the Whakatane Beautifying Society, said that some consideration had been given by the society to clearing the logs but members were unable to do anything at present. He thought that some action might be taken in the New Year. .
