INCREASE IN POLICE SOUGHT FOR WHAKATANE
Concerned With the amount of. crime at Whakatane, the Whakatane f Borough Council on Monday night decided to write to Police Headquarters, Wellington, requesting increased police assistance in the town. The Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, said that the position was serious and getting out of hand, as there were only two Constables on duty, under a Sergeant who was in • very poor health. He felt that until. Sergeant Farrell was fitter, somebody should . be sent to relieve him. Other councillors supported Mr Barry and stressed the fact the need for relief was most urgent; V • • The council made a similar re-. quest before, but the reply receiv- x -' ed stated that the matter of another Constable would receive consideration when the existing shortage of ' staff in the police force was overcome. The council decided to write again, this time stressing the urgency of the meed for a relieving officer.
