Accent On Xmas: Lyceum Club Meets
The Whakatane Lyceum Club held its closing function for the year on Friday, when a delightful Christmas programme was presented by the convener of the Musical Circle, Mrs R .E. Blair, and club members. The president, Mrs E. T. Dawson, after wishing members the compliments of the season/said that there would be no further club activities until March, when the annual meeting would be held on March 2. Members would of course be able to use the club rooms at any time. The programme opened, with the singing of “Christmas Awake” by all present, and well'known Christmas hymns, and lesser known very lovely carols were then presented by Mrs Norman Carter, Mrs T. G. Davie and Miss Howell. Charles Dicken’s Christmas books provided interesting entertainment when Mrs G. C. Watson read the account of Mr Fizziwig’s Ball, and Miss Howell the story of Mr Cratchitt’s Christmas dinner. Mrs E. Armstrong presented a masterly characterisation of Scrooge the aged miser who was reformed by the spirit of Christmas, This was warmly applauded. The singing of “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” brought the programme to a close, and afternoon tea was then served by the hostesses, Mesdames Combes, Cleaver, George, Andrew McLean and Alex Thomson.
