POWER POLE ON FIRE

What could have been a very serious fire was narrowly averted on Saturday when a power pole, which had caught alight, was extinguished by the Whakatane Fire Brigade. The pole, which is situated on the corner of James and Hinemoa Streets, carries high and low tension wires supplying all of Kopeopeo, including the hospital. The fire was put out before much damage was done.

It is understood that somebody was burning grass in the vicinity of the pole and went away and left the fire burning. It caught the pole, but the outbreak was seen by -a passer-by who noticed the brigade.

Yesterday the borough electrical engineer, Mr F. Lysaght, said the full extent of any damage that may have been caused was not yet known.
