Four Ex-Servicemen Out Of 207,569 Need Employment
The absence of unemployment among ex-servicemen was commented on by the Minister of Rehabilitation, the Hon. C. F. Skinner, at Wellington. The Minister said that although 207,569 ex-servicemen and' women were recorded with the Rehabilitation Department as having been discharged from the armed forces, only four ex-servicemen were registered as at the end of October as seeking employment. Two of these were fit for light work only, the other two being described as fully fit. “I feel that this position reflects not only the buoyant economic conditions which have prevailed since the war ended, but also the keenness with which ex-servicemen generally have tackled their own personal rehabilitation problems,” said Mr Skinner. An added indication of present rehabilitation trends was that during the past year very few had needed to apply for rehabilitation allowances, which are paid to exservicemen for a limited period from the time of their discharge until their placement in employment.
