XMAS CARNIVAL ARRANGEMENTS WELL ADVANCED
Arrangements for Whakatane’s Christmas and New Year Carnival are well on the way, latest development being the appearance all over the district of posters featuring the full programme. Given good weather, it should be a gay holiday period if the people will only enter into , the spirit of the carnival with true festive zest.
Thursday, December 23, features a children’s gala, with a fancy dress parade and prizes for costumes and decorated perambulators, tricycles, and trolleys.
After that, right through to January 3, there is something to appeal to everybody—dancing, bowls, mo-tor-cycle sports, a clay bird shoot, launch trips, cricket, with the. New Year’s Eve street carnival and the Ohope sports the outstanding features.
The street carnival is planned on a grand scale, planned to give pleasure to everybody, from children under ""6 to children over 60. The New Year will be welcomed in in the traditional manner, followed by dancing in the street. $ Commenting on the carnival arrangements in his annual report to the Chamber of Commerce, the president, Mr R. T. Morpeth, says: “This matter was introduced last year and after preliminary organising had been done under the chairmanship of Mr C. L. Jordan with Mr Lovelock as secretary it had to be abandoned on account of the epidemic. Again the committee has been set up this time with Mr H. G. Warren as chairman and Mr J. Duthie as secretary-organiser and a fair representation of young businessmen. We feel that the committee is away to a-good start and we trust that it will get the active support it deserves from all businessmen and that the carnival will prove to be a success and an annual event.
