Whakatane May Soon Have A Club (By “Shorty”) A group of enthusiasts have got together and tomorrow night at 6 o’clock a small sports meeting is to be held at the showgrounds. All young men and women and high, school boys and girls are invited. It is proposed to hold flat races, jumping and relays for a start. If this night is. a success—and there is every reason why it should be—, it is hoped to form a club immediately and to get right into training and competition. But it will depend largely on the attendance. It was suggested to me, that some of the business houses around - the town might be able to- contribute relay teams. If they are too small, some could combine forces arid select a name. This is a very good suggestion and has worked successfully
in other places, especially in towns that' are too small to support several clubs. I am certain it could works here, but it is up to the business firms. * Nov/ tomorrow, it will not be necessary to compete in any of the events. All that-is wanted is a good attendance. This will give the organisers an idea of the interest, if any. Competitors however, are desired. If only a few people turn up it is probable that Whakatane will remain without an athletic club. Tomorrow night is in the nature of an experiment. Its success depends on .the support from the town. There are a few interested enough to start the ball rolling. Surety there, must be others who could, carry on. .. I hope so. ’ '
