SWIMMING POOL AT OHOPE BEACH TO BE REOPENED

After being out of use for a considerable period the children’s swiming pool at Ohope beach is now being renovated, and it is hoped to have it open and ready for use by Christmas. A practical asset to the beaCh, the baths have long been needed for children, when the sea has been too rough for them to bathe.

A new pipe line supplying water to the pool has had to be constructed. This has already been done by a working bee of Ohope residents, after the route was first surveyed by the county engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner. Just on 500 feet of three inch piping has been used. The pool has had an unhappy history since it was first built. The dam from which the water was obtained was three times washed away until the site finally became unuseable. In an effort to get the pool back in to operation the Ohope Ratepayers’ Association received permission from the county engineer and the Domain Board to connect with a dam higher up the valley. So far the present site has been found satisfactory. It has taken just on two years for the Association to get the opening of the baths to its present stage. In 1946 there were no funds available. A letted was, then sent to the Minister of Internal Affairs, re*questing some assistance, in the form of a subsidy of £250. The Auckland Education Board was also communicated with, but . declined to do anything as the bath was not on school property.

Communication with the Internal Affairs Department was kept up until finally, a subsidy of £2OO was granted. Two-thirds of this was used to purchase piping through the Domain Board, which was required to apply for a permit. . Now, work on the pool is nearing completion. A group of boys are at present cleaning the bath and inside the enclosure. During the coming season it is proposed to hire a man to take care of the pool. For that purpose Mr F. Mahy Senr." has in hand a sum of £23 16s 6d which he has collected.
