Whitebait Season Closed The whitebait season officially ended on Wednesday. According to the Marine Department, the season is closed from November 30 until Jyme 1 of each year. Club’s Bottle Drive Not many sporting organisations raise money by selling bottles in Whakatane. But one body, the Whakatane Rowing Club, does every year with a combined bottle drive. It is surprising how much can be made on bottles, as the club well knows. Last year brought to light a record collection and tomorrow’s drive by the club is hoped to be larger than any of previous years. Breakdown At Beacon Owing to the breakdown of a Linotype machine at the Beacon office on Tuesday afternoon, a number of advertisers and contributors had to be disappointed. Also, Wednesday’s paper was not , all we should have liked it to be, and today’s leaves something to be desired. However, we hope to be back to full setting.capacity next week. We regret any inconvenience the mishap caused. Was There A Fire, * There was a fire at Whakatane on Wednesday afternoon, a Beacon reporter was told. A siren was sounded so it must have been a fire. The reporter was not sure. He inquired from the fire brigade. Was there a fire? The brigade denied any knowledge of one. But, the reporter asked, what about the siren. Oh! that, said the brigade. That is the siren from the paper mills, whichis' sounded every Wednesday at 4 p.m. There was no fire. Wet Year That 1948 .is one. of the wettiest years experienced in the Bay of Plenty for some considerable time, is shown in the amount of rain recorded on the Rangitaiki" Plains. The average fall for the last 11 months is .70.32 inches. Compare this with the average for the corresponding period last year, which was 52.70 inches. The average for November over the past 10 years is 3.14. During last month 6.13 inches was recorded. There were 16 wet days, with the heaviest fall of 1.28 inches being on November 15. Strand Parking . Business mens cars parked in the Strand occupy approximately 75 per cent of the parking space, .and repeated complaints are .received from country residents.. In an endeavour to overcome the difficulty, following members of the Chamber of Commerce have been deputed' to .call on car owners in their respective business areas and ask that they park away from the Strand on FRIDAYS and busy periods such as Christmas week: Messrs C. Kingsley-Smith, M. Lennie, R. Tj Morpeth, B. L. Butler, T. Jordan, N. H. Hockin and D. Whittle. It is hoped that business men will cooperate with the committee.
