Well Played, Sir!
The Rev. J. T. Holland, Vicar of Upper Riccarton, a son of Bishop Holland, formerly of Wellington and now Dean of Norwich, was to have a new vicarage put up for him to replace the 90-year-old vicarage he still inhabits. All the plans were made and finances arranged, when it came to the notice of the Vicar and Vestry that there were still about 100 people in the parish waiting for houses to be built, whereupon the Vicar signified that he thought would not be appropriate to push on with the scheme until these people had had a chance to get their own homes built. The vestry agreed to postpone the building for about six months. ,
