Grandma Knew A Bit About Glamour

Grandmother had no more than a nodding acquaintance with the beauty parlour, nor did she have acces to all the fragrant cosmetics women enjoy today. One thing Grandma did have in abundance, however, was ingenuity. She passed down many valuable beauty hints which the Hollywood stars will find wonderful for use today. Noted for her radiant complexion, Ava Gardner gives most of her credit to her grandmother’s favourite beauty secret—the use of meal as a face cleanser. Ava places a little meal in her hand, damps it with water, and then rubs it all over her face and neck. This keeps the pores free from dirt, thus eliminating many of the face blemishes due to external causes. Next comes a thorough cleansing with soap and water. Ave favours pure castle soap and, whenever possible, rain water. Ava’s grandmother also taught her that she could keep her hands in soap suds without injury to the skin if the hands are dipped in vinegar immediately after. The acids destroy the corrosive effects of the alkali and make the hands soft and white. Deborah Kerr, who stars opposite Spencer Tracey in “Edward, My Son,” is also a strong advocate of grandmothers beauty methods. Hers taught her that glycerine mixed with rose water make a wonderful lubricant for face and hands. Also, says Miss Kerr, cold, weak tea is a wonderful eye stimulant.
