County Collects Large Amount Of Maori Rates
The collection of Maori rates for the past year in the Whakatane County must be almost a record, as revealed in the report of the chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, presented at the annual meeting of the Whakatane County Council yesterday. The total rates collected was £28,464, including Maori rates. Of the total Maori rates, 62 per cent, was collected and Mr Burnett said that he thought it-must be one of the highest received by any council -in New Zealand. Some councils consider themselves lucky if they collect any Maori rates.
Mr Burnett added that the credit must go to the collector, Mr A. O. Stewart, for his untiring efforts to gather in the revenue. “While in Wellington,” Mr Burnett said, “The Prime Minister remarked to me that the Whakatane County Council must be one of the highest receivers of Maori rates in the country.” The amount of Pakeha rates collected was 98 per cent.
