BAY OF PLENTY BEACON Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1948 CALF CLUBS Today, at Manawahe, the first of this season’s school field days is being conducted by the Rangitaiki Plains Calf Club Association. From now to the end of the month Calf Club members and judges will be busy. Realising the tremendous interest taken in this movement, and its great value as part of the education of farmers of the future, the BEACON hopes that Club officials will take advantage of the space that is available to them and submit accounts of the field days for publication immediately after they have been held. We feel a certain regret that our staff is not big enough to make a reporter available to follow the series. Calf clubs have become almost a craze, but one worthy of encouragement, teaching as they do everything from selecting a calf to preparing it for the show ring. Young New Zealanders have found in Calf Clubs an outlet for their natural love of animals, and the comradeship of others interested in the same hobby. Competition adds spice to the intensely interesting adventure of rearing their own stock. Those are some of the reasons why there are over 12,460 Club members in New'Zealand today, and nearly 7,700 in the Auckland Education district. Tied in with the schools, the movement has become an integral part of the country child’s education, and something that will have lasting value when the school children of today become the farmers and stockmen of tomorrow. Parents, too, have shown the liveliest interest. Their assistance in the organisation and management of Club work has been invaluable and, perhaps more important, has brought them into closer touch with the schools.
