Hollywood Motion Picture Industry Is At Low Ebb
The motion picture industry in Hollywood is at the lowes ebb in its history, says the American Associated Press. More actors are out of work than ever before. Today there are only 372 players under contract to studios, compared with 741 last year. The depression is even worse for free-lance players because the studios are hiring as few of these as posible. Two years ago 1200 extras were working every day on production lots. Now the average is 400 a day. Three thousand union workers have been dropped from the payrolls. For every three pictures in production three years ago there are only two today, and half of these are “quickies” made at low cost. Reasons for the Hollywood de- # pression are the high cost of making films and the small return from foreign countries. It is estimated that this year’s income from abroad will be less than half that of 1946. Local revenue also has fallen slightly.
