HEAVY VEHICLES COLLAPSE BRIDGE OVER HAUMEA

Occupants Have A Fortunate Escape

Collapsing under the weight of a transporter and dragline the bridge over the Haumea River, on the Galatea Road, was completely wrecked about midday on Tuesday. Nobody was injured. The vehicles managed just to cross the bridge before it gave way, the occupants having a narrow escape. Over 40 years old, the bridge was constructed of wood and was used very extensively. Wooden panels across the centre snapped completely under the strain of the heavy weight and the bridge fell in halves. Yesterday the county engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, said the bridge was almost completely wrecked and work on replacing it was now under way. On Wednesday the works committee of the county council inspected the damaged structure.
