SWIMMING CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING POORLY ATTENDED
Poor attendances at public meetings appear to be the fashion at Whakatane. The attendance to the annual meeting of the Whakatane Swimming Club was no exception. With a club membership of 160 in the last active season little worry was expressed, regarding attendance. The result however, was worse than had even been imagined. Six came. There were 10 apologies. Although it was difficult to carry on with only half a dozen it was decided to continue the meeting in the hope that more would arrive later. No one else came. The report was presented by the secretary, Mr R. S. Buttimore, who described how the club was hit hard by the outbreak of poliomyelitis last season. “We were geared to commence activities on a very much larger scale than the successful previous year,” he said. “But all our plans had to be abandoned, with the result that no instruction was undertaken at all.”. The club had not been entirely dead, he added. Earlier in the season a picnic had been conducted which was attended by about 80 of the younger members. It was decided to Hold opening day on November 20 at the school baths. Swimming instruction will be given during the afternoon; girls from 1.30 to 2.30 and boys from 2.45 to 3.45. Membership fees for the year were fixed at 6d for members under 15 and 2/6 for over that age.
