Cricket At Week-End: United Successfully Defend Williams Cup

* Whakatane United cricketers successfully defend the William’s Cup during the week-end by defeating the Pirates Club of Rotorua by 87 runs on the first innings. The start of the match was delayed by rain until 1 p.m. and United then commenced batting Spring and McKenzie opening the innings. They were not separated until 58 runs were on the board, when Spring was given out lbw for 25. Chamberlain was clean bowled and Le Pine joined McKenzie, who was now well set, and these two added a further 57 to the score before Le Pine was caught at mid-off for 22. The score board now read 121 for 3. Palmer joined McKenzie, who was now in the sixties and batting confidently. Afternoon tea came at 3.30 p.m., McKenzie being 92 not out and Palmer 11 not out. After the adjournment McKenzie reached his century with a four to the leg boundary and then retired with 109 to his credit. His innings included six 6’s and seven 4’s.
