Alcoholism Not A Real Problem In N.Z.
“New Zealand is a temperate country compared with the rest of the world,” stated the Very Rev. J. D. Smith presenting the report of the temperance committee to the Presbyterian General Assembly. “There is no real problem of alcoholism in New Zealand.” To support this, he said that there had been no single case of alcoholism admitted to a mental hospital in the country last year. “New Zealanders are beer-drinkers, not spirit-drinkers, as is the case in countries like the United States, where there are 1,000,000 alcoholics,” said Mr Smith in connection with the new Licensing Bill. !>
