TANEATUA W.I. PARTY

There was a very good attendance of visitors and members at the Taneatua W.I. birthday party held in the Taneatua hall. The president extended a welcome to the guests. The Federation president’s letter was read and Mrs Bennett presented a report of the bi-annual Council meeting. The roll call “A gift for the Hospital” was well responded to. j ■ An acting competition proved amusing and was won by Mrs Wylde. Two humorous sketches and a very amusing mime were presented by members of the drama circle. A Scotch poem by Mrs R. McGougan and two items by the glee club were very well received. The birthday cake ceremony was performed by Mesdames Dueker (Thornton), Looney (Waimana) and Murphy (Whakatane). The competitions were won by Mrs Hayward with Mrs McGougan second and Mrs Allen third. Best vegetable, Mrs Bennett 1, Mrs Hayward 2; best flower, Mrs Bennett 1, Mrs Grey 2, Mrs Laird 3; three jam tarts, puff pastry, Mrs Gardner 1. GARDEN CIRCLE The Taneatua W.I. gardening circle met recently at Mrs Fitchett’s residence, Mrs Fitchett presiding over a very good attendance. The balance sheet of the recent flower show was presented and showed a credit balance. It was decided to purchase gladioli bulbs to be distributed to circle members, and to hold a competition in connection with them later in the year. The seasonal hint roll call brought forth some good ideas. A competition arranged by the hostess was won by Mrs Grey. The well-kept garden was much admired, the Iceland poppies and gerberas being particularly lovely. Competitions:— Decorated hat: Mrs Lawn 1, Mrs Hayward 2, Mrs Olliver 3. Best flower. Mrs Fitchett 1. Mrs Grey 2. ' . Telephone Surf Alarm On-Wednesday night the Whakatane Surf and Life Saving Club decided to try to establish a telephone alarm system from the Eastern and Western ends of Ohope to the Club house to help in summer safety patrols.
