CLUB’S ROWING SKIFF ARRIVES AT WHAKATANE
Light & Fragile: Australian Made
The peace and quietness of a Thursday afternoon at Whakatane was rudely shattered yesterday: Loud shouts and yells coming from the direction of the, rowing shed gave encouragement to the belief that a fight was in progress. In fact, it was nothing of the kind.
It was just a few members of the Whakatane Rowing Club expressing a welcome to their new four oar practice skiff, which .arrived the, same day from Auckland by the coastal vessel Clansfnan. Shining with polished varnish work and mental fittings the new craft presented a fine picture of streamlined perfection. Ordered' three months ago from Messrs Botteril and Fraser, boat builders of Melbourne, the skiff was constructed on the Best and Best pattern. That is with a smooth hull, as against the clinker type which make up the remainder of the club’s fleet.' Made of plywood it is very light and fragile and lobks more like a racer than a practice job.
■ The riggers are painted in the club’s colours. Two black and two white. The footrests are more like shoes and are ehcased in leather that can be laced to the rower’s requirements. The heel* rests on a metal base. This is the first Australian-made boat owned by the Whakatane Club, the others being constructed in New Zealand. If it proves satisfactory another craft may be ordered next year.
The purchase of this boat is the result of the financial appeals made by the club last year. The public will have a chance to view it on Saturday when it is to be on display.
