PARENT-TEACHER FILM EVENING WAS FULL OF INTEREST

A splendid programme of films was shown at the Parent-Teacher Association meeting at the High School on Monday evening, and three musical items, • which were much appreciated, were given by High School pupils—two violin solos by lan Breward and a vocal solo by'Colin Davidson. The longest film, entitled “Today and Tomorrow”, gave an interesting picture of the life and methods of the farmers of the lands of the Middle East, from Syria to Egypt, and was also a study of the food, problems of these lands and the methods by which the Middle East Supply Commission helped in their solution during the war. The work Included combating plagues of locusts, overcoming irrigation problems, dealing with soil erosion, and improving the water buffalo herds.

Community Centres “Good Neighbours” dealt with the topical subject of Community Centres and the development of a social centre or community centre in a Scottish village was shown. The community solved the problem of providing a building and of raising sufficient money to entitle them'to government assistance. The Centre became the headquarters of the various Clubs of the village, and groups were formed for crafts, arts, dancing, etc. “Rhythm" and Movement” was a New Zealand Film Unit production dealing with experimental physical culture work and included some fine rooftop photography. A special feature of interest in this film was the music by the New Zealand composer, Douglas Lilbufn. “Shown by Request” was the title of a film produced by the British Government to illustrate the work of the Ministry of Information in supplying films “On Request” from the Film Library and the use of mobile vans with the equipment for showing 16 mm films at schools in isolated localities. This was of particular interest because much, the same procedure in the despatch of films is followed by the National Film Library in New Zealand, and thanks are due to this Library for the excellent programme .of films shown on Monday night'.
