Fireworks Were In Short Supply

Restricted supplies of fireworks rather put the brake on Guy Fawkes celebrations, this year, but the old tradition was kept up in this district to the limit of the materials available —and import restrictions could not affect tl|e bonfires.

In comparison with pre-war years, supplies of fireworks were meagre. One local retailer explained it by saying that in his opinion indent licenses had been “cut to ribbons” to allow for bigger supplies on the occasion of the Royal visit next year, which would probably be marked in many districts by fireworks displays on an unprecedented scale.

Whether or not that is the case, it is a fact that local supplies were not nearly sufficient to. meet the demand, and those who had left their purchases to the last minute were disappointed. At Whakatane; itself, there was little in the way of organised celebrations, though many back yards sported their own small displays. In one locality, Mrs Joe organised a children’s guy competition. The judge, Mr R. V. Mercer, placed the “Breward Special” first and “Dalton Model” second.
