Whakatane Rowing Club Getting Under Way For Season With New Fours
-k. (By “Coxswain”) The arrival of a new practice four to the present fleet of the Whakatane Rowing Club will be the first new boat purchased since before the war. The only type available at present the new craft is constructed of plywood and manufactured in Australia. The exact date of delivery is not yet known although it will be brought /rora Auckland by coastal vessel. Old rowers of the Club will be particularly interested to learn that the old racer “Wairere” has been brought back in to >' commission. Brightened up here and there the old skiff is doing excellent work during the practices and still shows signs of her former glory. Rowing is an unusual sport and newcomers to the game have some excuse for getting rather confused with the various terms. Here are a few. “Catch crabs” without fishing; “dig deep” without gardening; “swing fore and aft” without joining the recently .founded club of the same name. And “more weight” does not mean to double eating at each meal. One can imagine how a foreigner would feel .just learning English and joining a rowing club. Tomorrow is the opening day for the Whakatane Club. Members from the Tauranga Club are expected to take part. Beside the usual races there will be speedboat and aquaplaning demonstrations.
