State Houses For Rural Workers
A request for details of the number of State houses for rural workers required in the various districts of the Bay of Plenty was made by the Organising Secretary, Mr E. J. Vosper, at a meeting of the executive of the Bay of Plenty Province Federated Farmers.
The president, Mr A. L. Friis, explained that Federated Farmers were trying to persuade the Government to undertake a State house building scheme in rural districts, and the Federation Headquarters' needed the figures to help them in their representations. Mr S. A. Wells, Katikati, said that the additional houses were certainly needed to relieve the shortage of farm labour. He understood that, in his district, some State houses were to be built, and he was hopeful that twelve units were to be erected there. A Te Puke delegate, Mr E. B. Carey, said that State houses for rural workers were definitely needed in his district, but he did not know what responsibilities would be incurred in the scheme. Mr Friis replied that all responsibilities would be incurred by the State.
