Burglary Epidemic Mystery Cleared Up: Boy Responsible
A youth who was brought before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Children's Court at Whakatane yesterday admitted seven charges of burglary and theft, clearing up the mystery of Whakatane's recent "burglary epidemic." Police evidence was that numerous business premises in the town, had been broken into and small sums of money taken, and the offences continued to recur, so they kept watch and on the night of October 2 Constable Puddick, concealed behind a building, saw the youth acting in a suspicious manner. When accosted the boy ran away, throwing away something that afterwards turned out to be a hacksaw which had been stolen from A. M. Bislev and Co's premises on September 18. Constable Puddick caught him in the Council yards and the boy admitted the burglaries. He was ad-
mitted to the care. of the Superintendent of Child Welfare with a recommendation that he should have institutional training, and was ordered to make restitution of £2O 10s.
