TE AROHA HOLDS PUBLIC MEETING LIKE OUR OWN
Few Interested: Only Four Attend
Whakatane is not the only town where meetings are poorly attended. Recently at Te Aroha a public meeting- to organise a. New Year carinTvall, similar to that planned for Whakatane, drew an attendance of four and a press representative. In the light of the Te Aroha meeting Whakatane can take, pride in the fact that there were seven at our meeting, press representative included. Like the Whakatane meeting, that at Te Aroha could do nothing. One man however, was very bitter at the poor attendance. He wanted the accumulated funds, amounting to about £230, to be given to the Cancer Campaign Fund, saying: "I think those who are suffering from that dreadful scourge would appreciate the gift more than the people of Te Aroha have appreciated our work in the past." - This however, was not done. It was decided to call a meeting to dispose of the funds, but if anyone is sufficiently interested to want a carnival they will be quite at liberty "to organise one. Unlike Te Aroha, where nothing further is to be done, the people of Whakatane still have a furth r chance to organise a carnival at the meeting tomorrow night, provided, of course, that they want to. Perhaps the remarks of one of the Te Aroha residents refers to the attitude of Whakatane citizens. "The trouble is the people want the carnival all right but they just want someone to do the work for them."
