Obscene Language & Resisting Police
Sequel to a disturbance in the public bar of a Whakatane hotel last Friday was heard in the Magistrate's Court, Whakatane, yesterday, when Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., sentenced Joe Hona to 14 days' imprisonment for using obscene language in a public place and a further 14 days' for resisting the police. Hona pleaded guilty to those charges and to a third of drunkenness, on which he was convicted and discharged. Constable R. F. Julian said that about 5.30 p.m. on Friday he and Constable Puddick. in the course of a routine check of the hotel, found Hona trying to start a fight. They warned him about his conduct, but a few minutes later he did start a fight, and resisted violently all the way when the police took him outside, where he used the language complained of. He was drunk and though "quite decent" when sober, was often troublesome under the influence of liquor.
