Farewell Evening At Thornton

The Thornton Hall was filled to capacity last Thursday evening for a concert and dance sponsored by the Glee Club to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs D. B. Currie and family who left this week to take up residence at Auckland. All items by the Glee Club were very well received as were the humorous recitations, school boy howlers, given by Boy Scouts, Miss M. McDonald and Mr Currie. Mesdames Tooke and Fisher sang two duets and Mr Jones two songs, while G. and B. Adams played a selection on piano accordion and steel guitar. After the concluding items by the Club “Sweet and Low” and “The Serenade of the Bells” Mr Robins, on behalf of the residents, presented Mr and Mrs Currie with a handsome chiming clock, and a set of carvers and cutlery. He spoke of the real regret all felt at their guests’ departure. Mr Mick Davis spoke similarly on behalf of their Maori friends* and Mrs Ducker, representing the Women’s Institute, -made a presentation to Mrs Currie wishing them all success in their new venture. ' Mr Currie in replying added a humorous kick by quoting Napoleon’s farewell to his Grandmother. A delicious supper was served and dancing continued until the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought the evening to a close.
