Tauranga To Close Transit Housing In Twelve Months’ Time.
A recommendation, tabled by' the Tauranga Borough Council’s housing committee, that the transit camp be closed twelve months from the first of next month, if circumstances permitted, was adopted at the monthly meeting of the council. The Mayor (Mr L. R. Wilkinson) stated that it was considered that the real need for housing had been met, and that twelve months notice would be sufficient for those already being housed there. Permanent houses must be found and the transit camp was only a temporary expedient. “We have done what we set out to do,” added the Mayor, who pointed out that if the council was to keep the camp going, tremendous expense in maintenance would be involved.
