GOLFERS FACE FOUL WEATHER AT START OF TOURNEY ON SATURDAY
i Don’t let any tough footballers imagine golf is a game for softies jor hasbeens. The fact that there ! were only very scratchings from the Whakatane Golf Club’s tournament which opened in foul weather ion Saturday proved beyond doubt that these golfers are truly rugged types. Sunday proved the best day of the three, with a blustering wind on Monday making the going hard. However,’ events were keenly con- ' tested, and some of the cards handed in were remarkably good under the circumstances. I For the second year in succession, 1 E. S. Toogood, of Gisborne, won the open championship beating T. Jones, , Taumarunui, 6 and 4. In his semi- ! final match Toogood, with an ap- | proximate medal round of 70, two under par, defeated F. Buckler, of. Remuera, 3 and 2. Jones defeated A. ! Cahir, of Rotorua, at the 19th hole of the other semi-final. A second successive win was also scored in the Rangitaiki Cup by W. S.
