Pipe Band's Success At Claudelands
The Whakatane Highland Pipe Band competed with some success in the massed Highland Pipe Bands display at Claudelands Showgrounds, on Saturday. Fourteen bands, representing almost th,e whole of hte Auckland Province, took part in the display. In the evening visiting bands were entertained at a highland dance in the C.A.C. Hall. The bands assembled in Garden Place and all took part in a street march. The programme at Claudelands opened with a massed bands display followed by girls marching displays, quickstep, drum majors’ and massed drumming displays. The programme concluded with a further massed bands display. Whakatane gained a well deserved win in the Quickstep contest and provided the music for the winners of the girls marching displays. Results were:— Street March: Cambridge 1, Otorohanga 2, Opotiki 3. Quickstep: Whakatane 1, Tauranga 2, Auckland District 3. ' Girls’ Marching: Rockdale (Te Awamutu) 1, Kiwis (Hamilton) 2, Matamata 3. , v Pipe Major H. D. Paterson led Whakatane and the Drum Major was Mr H. Mole. ‘ 4
