Official Opening Of Bowling Season
The Whakatane Bowling Club opened the 1948-49 season on Saturday. Whilst the weather was unsettled the many bowlers present however managed in most cases to finish the afternoon programme. The president, Mr J. W-. Wilson, before declaring the greens open, welcomed the ladies, the new members and the visiting bowlers from Te Puke, Taneatua and Ohope. He extended special thanks to the club members who had done : such good work during the winter months, especially Messrs W. Howat (Senr) and W. Compton, these members having put in a large amount of time and hard work in levelling and rebuilding the banks of the greens. Mr Wilson then declared the greens open and asked his daughter, MissDiana Wilson, to throw the first jack. Mr G. Caisley was called on to play* the first bowl, and bowlers soon, settled down to a good game. During the. afternoon the ladies served a sumptuous afternoon tea..
