BUSY SIX MONTHS REVIEWED

W.I. FEDERATION REPORT “The past six months have been busy ones for our Federation, with first the Drama Festival and then the Institute Show to prepare for, but with the full co-operation of the Institutes and Executive Committee, everything went with a swing, both events being very successful,” says the bi-annual report of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Federation of Women’s Institutes. Mrs K. Armstrong was again elected president, while the number on the executive committee was raised to eleven, all nominees being elected. . “Our V.Os. continue to do fine work in visiting and helping all Institutes. This year, Mrs Peck, of Otakiri W. 1., was appointed as Arts and Crafts V.O. The annual meeting, held at Whakatane, was most enjoyable, there being a large attendance of delegates and members. Mrs Barnicoat, who was then Dominion President, was present, and delighted all with her friendly and interesting address. The Group Travel visit to Northland proved very successful, all members thoroughly enjoying it. Whether this scheme is to be continued or not rests with the Institutes.

. “We again held a two-day Orama Festival this year at Taneatua, Mrs Judith Terry, of Auckland, being the adjudicator. The plays were of the usual high standard which was favourably commented on by Mrs. Terry. Both the comedy and drama sections for\ all-women casts were won by Taneatua W.I. There were no entries for mixed casts. Mrs Hepburn, of Edgecumbe W. 1., won the cup for the best actress. We extend our heartiest congratulations to Mrs Hepburn and to Taneatua W.I. The morning after the.'.Drama Festival, Mrs Terry held a Drama School at Edgecumbe. There was a good attendance and much helpful advice and instruction was given by Mrs Terry, to whom we owe our thanks for her interest.

“On July 20 the winning plays were presented at Edgecumbe, and cups presented to successful competitors. A few weeks later, another concert was held, several of the other plays being presented, and this also was quite a successful evening.

“Mrs Mayo attended the conference at Wellington as Federation delegate, and gave a very interesting report on her return. Headquarters have asked that special attention be paid this year to A.C.W.W. payments.

“A new departure this year was a full Institute Show to take the place of the Home Section of the Eisteddfod. The show, which was postponed on account of the poliomyelitis epidemic, was held in September in the, Winter Show Buildings in Whakatane. It was very successful, there being nearly 1000 entries from all parts of the Federation. Much beautiful work was on show, the standard comparing more than favourably with that of shows in other parts of the Dominion. Mrs Armstrong is tq. be congratulated on her organisation and work which went so far towards making the show the success it was. We extend congratulations to all successful competitors, and our thanks to all those members who gave such willing help. “Five song service badges have been awarded this half-year, to Mesdames Print, Ryde, Burt, Reichardt, and Miss ,Neilsoh. In conclusion' -Wei: extend Our! thanks to all Institutes and members for their help and co-operation during the past six months, and wish them every success in the future.” -
