Paroa Club Finishes Successful Season With Pile Cup Win With a decisive win over Omaio, champion Club- of the Apanui SubUnion, on Saturday Paroa retained the John Pile Memorial Cup for the i third year in succession. In addition to that, Paroa still hold the Whakatane Sub-Union championship, making the season just closed a highly successful one from their point of , view. | . Omaio, winning the toss, elected to play with the wind. After two minutes T. Kerei with a determined run scored for Omaio, R. Rata converting. s—o. Play fluctuated in midfield with the Omaio pack playing fast but as individuals thus spoiling some good chances. At this stage the Paroa forwards were more constructive in their play. After they took the ball down to within 5 -yards of the Omaio line, a scrum took place, Paroa hooked, and Dodd, working the blind side handed on to Laurie who scored wide out. Dodd’s kick against the wind missed. Omaio 5, Paroa 3. | Lafferty retired hurt and C. Pile replaced him. Play again see-sawed | from end to end, until from halfjway, Paroa dribbled the .ball through for M. Harawira to follow fast and score. Dodd’s kick again missed. Paroa 6, Omaio 5. Shortly after the kick-off Paroa took the ball back to Omaio’s line
and a scrum took place, Paroa hooking for Dodd to pass on to Laurie who scored his second try. Halftime score, Paroa 9, Omaio 5. Ten minutes after resuming Wharepapa (Omaio) retired with a fractured shoulder, Peters replacing him. From a line out on Omaio’s side of half-way Ruru received the ball and ran strongly t<3 score well out. Paroa 12, Omaio 5. From the kick-off Omaio took the ball down to the Paroa goal line, Carlo going over for a try in the corner. Paroa 12, Omaio 8. Ten minutes before time Paroa kicking a high ball for Harawira to get up and catch the fullback in possession. The ball rolling clear gave Dodd, who backed up fast, a chance to toe the ball over the line to fall on it for a score. The kick again failed. Paroa 15, Omaio 8.
