Whakatane W.I. Celebrates Its 19th Birthday
An excellent attendance of members and visitors met.iri the Methodist Hall recently to celebrate the nineteenth birthday of the Whakatane Women’s Institute. The president extended a hearty welcome to guests, old members and new ones* From the Mayor of Whakatane a letter of thanks to members who assisted in the United Nations Children’s appeal collection was received. A letter from Mrs W. L. Richards, convener of the Women’s Organisations of Rotorua and Bay of Plenty, representing Mr Moncur, Mayor of Rotorua, suggested that, in commemoration of the . Royal visit a bulk food parcel Jse subscribed to and presented to Their Majesties for distribution to the people of Britain. The letter also suggested that Princess Margaret be asked to present to the in Orphanages in Britain food which is subscribed to by school children in Rotorua and Bay of Members whose birthdays occurred, this month were presented with sprays and the good wishes of the Institute. Mrs ! Sutcliffe proposed that members congratulate Mrs Petty on her appointment. as the first woman J.P. in the Bay of Plenty and this was carried unanimously. The Institute Glee Circle entertained with the songs, “When Daisies Died,” “Early One Morning” and “Jerusalem.” , Mrs K. Stewart drew the attention of those present by announcing that “Jerusalem” was the theme song of English Women’s Institutes. For the golden thread Mrs Stewart gave another of her most interesting travel talks. Her subject, “The Royal Wedding” was much appreciated by all. Mrs N. Carter sang two solos, “All Thro the Night” and “Passing By”. The Drama Circle created fun and laughter in presenting a humorous play entitled “A day’s good cause.” The beautiful birthday c&ke which held a conspicuous place during the meeting was ! made by Mffs Angus and iced by the president, Mrs Print. Mrs Ryde who was the oldest member of the Institute, was called, upon to cut the cake. ~ Competitions:— Decorated basket: Mrs Hanham 1, Mrs Sutcliffe 2. Sponge sandwich: Mrs Barker 1, Miss L. Hirst 2. _ Best rose: Mrs Zinsli 1, Mrs King Jnr. 2.
