Felt Hats
Different hats need different styles but usually the same method can be applied when “working” felt. You can use the bottom of a saucepan for a mould for the crown of the hat, or you can use a pudding basin. Damp the felt thoroughly remembering that if it is wool felt it
pis likely to shrink; a fur felt should be all right. The best way is to hold it in the steam of a boiling kettle, twisting it round and round so that it is damp all over. Then pull the crown into shape over the mould and keep trying it on your head till you have the right size and shape. Leave the hat on the mould till it is dry. To make your brim turn up, damp it thoroughly and then use a mould made either from newspaper folded tightly into a roll, or from cotton wool stuffed into a sausage shape of material. Smoth your brim round this until it is the shape you want To keep it turned up you can of course slip-stitch some millinery wire round the edge and then cover this with a nairow band of ribbon.
