University Hostel In response to an appeal from the University authorities, the Whakatane Borough Council has decided to give £2 towars the fund for the purchase of Stonehurst, Auckland, for use as a hostel, for country students studying at Auckkland. Gwine Back t’ Dixie Negro families in California have offered to adopt so many, illegitimate coloured war babies now in England that the County Council of Somersetshire alone has appropriated 3000 dollars to pay expenses of the children’s escorts. Borough Building Permits There were 13 building permits issued by . the Whakatane Borough. Council’s inspector, Mr F. W. Lysaght, during September. Three were for new residences, 3 for garages and 2 for sheds. Value of the buildings covered by the 13 permits is £7345. ■ , New Water Connections A total of 21 new connections to the Whakatane Borough water supply were made during the month covered in the report of the fore-man-engineer, Mr W. S. Henderson, to the Borough Council’s monthly meeting on Monday night. They included 12 for new State housing units off Stewart Street. Druid’s Card Evening The third of a series of flag 500 card evenings organised by the Whakatane Druid’s 'Lodge, was held on Monday evening. There was again an excellent attendance of card enthusiasts. An enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the serving of a tasty home-made supper by lady members. Prize winners were: Mesdames Roulston, Hansen, Hancock and Chapman. Booby prizes, Mesdames Pickles (2), Latham and Wallace. t Health Stamps Slump Health Stamp sales at Whakatane have slumped, after the brightest start on record. This district still has a long way to go to achieve its quota, but.-, it should not be necessary to remind citizens of the worthwhile work their little contributions will, be helping to carry out. Last year 10 children from Whakatane, 12 from Opotiki, 8 from Taneatua-, and 4 from Te Kaha had the benefit of a healthful holiday— all through Health Stamps. New Ration Cards When the Post Office at Whakatane started issuing the new butter ration cards on Monday, business was brisk, and about 230 were hdnded out, with about 50 at Kopeopeo In addition, a large number of people took application forms away to fillin at home. It is pointed out by the Postmaster, Mr S. W. Hills, that all the cards should, be out by October 25, and the Post Office staff will appreciate early which should be accompanied by present ration book§.
