Local Contender Missed All Blacks, But Shaped Well In Big Games There was not u a little disappointment locally when Whakatane’s® contender for All Black honours, B. McGougan, failed to make the grade. However, he deserves hearty congratulations for going as far as he did, and was, probably a little unfortunate in that there were a number of outstanding wingers on offer.'' At any rate, this season’s experience in really big football will have taught him a lot, and there is no doubt he will have picked up some useful hints to hand on to club mates for use next year. He and his friends will be able to temper their disappointment with the knowledge that, although he did not make the big team, his performances were ngthing for him or the district to be ashamed of, and he may yet get a chance against the Wallabies. Week-End Rugby In the Pile Cup fixture at Whakatane on Saturday, Paroa again retained the trophy, this time with a win over Omaio (Apanui). United Juniors beat Hamilton Old Boys at Hamilton, 12—3.
