Retiring Star
Charley Grapewin, now on location with the 20th Century Fox “Sand” company near Durango, Colorado, announces that he is retiring from the screen. Charley made his first motion picture in 1898, just 53 years ago this summer. “I have had enough,” says Charley. “It’s about time for me to step aside and give some young actor a chance.” “Sand” based on the Will James’ story, is Grapewin’s 125th picture. His first three pictures with-a-story were “Above the Limit,” “Playing the Races” and “My Best Girl,” the latter made in Paramount Park, Philadelphia, July 4, 1896. Charley has good reason to claim that he has had a longer motion picture career than any other living actor. Crapewin’s last pictures for 20th Century Fox were his memorable roles in “Grapes of Wrath” and “Tobacco Road.” Upon retirement, Charley will make his home on his beautiful ranch near Corona, California.
