ACCESS BRIDGES

Mr H. G. Warren is to be congratulated on bis action in bringing before the Harbour Board the condition of Whakatane’s main access bridge, and one also commends Mr W. Hunter’s equally pointed reference to the one at Edgecumbe. It is a grim thought that a healthy-sized flood might cut us off completely from the plains

by finishing off what time has done to a couple of antiquated and delapidated bridges. Mr Warren recalled Mr Semple’s optimism of but a short time ago, when we were going to get a new bridge, and a new Post Office amongst other things. He also recalled the much less cheery tone of a more recent communication from Mr Semple, when he went to some pains to point out just how little chance there was of immediately implementing his.earlier promises. One understands Mr Semple’s difficulty. He cannot possibly please everybody. Still, the fact that he once weakened to the point of admitting the urgency of the bridge job indicates that continued pressure might not be without result. Let us hope, therefore, that other public men here will.-join with Messrs Warren and Hunter in urging through every possible channel that this place should get the access its progress warrants.
