FROM THE WORLD OF SPORT.

BITTER, WET WEATHER CONDITIONS SPOIL RUGBY ON SATURDAY Bitterly cold, wet weather spoiled Saturday’s Rugby for both spectators and players. Few side-liners turned out, and those who did -not missed some fine exhibitions of mudlarking. Paroa again retained the Pile Cup with a draw against a rugged Ruatahuna side, 6 all, and Poroporo finally held the Bracken Cup with an extra-time win over United. In the junior grade, United beat Poroporo 30—0 for the Wilson Cup.

Paroa On The Ball All The Way: Unlucky

Paroa could be said to be a bit unlucky against Ruatahuna. Only the mud saved the visitors. As it was, a draw was a fair indication of the relative merits of the teams on the day, but Paroa had the better of it territorially and should have been able to make more of the chances that came their way. In the backs, the conditions gave little chance for any of the players to show their paces, but Lamb, Ruatahuna’s full back, must be given full marks for sound handling and safe line-finding. Paroa’s backs had not a great deal to do, with the exception of the half, Dodd, who was a bit inclined to overwork himself at the expense of starving the rest of the line. The forwards went well, with Ranapia showing flashes of his old form after a spell on the sick list. Towards the end of the game in particular they were definitely on top, but had a margin of superiority throughout. Ruatahuna’s forwards played hard and lasted well, but they failed to pack well in the rucks, and were generally not so good as their opponents in . the tight work. Scorers:— Paroa (6 points): P. Ratahi, a try; J. Dodd, a penalty goal. Ruatahuna (6 points): Te Kotahi. a try; S. Lamb, a penalty goal.

Poroporo Just Hold Bracken Cup Again

Poroporo just managed to retain the Bracken Cup against a strong challenge from United. Full time found the score 6 all, and two short spells of extra time were played, Poroporo winning finally when United forced. Actually, on the run of play, Poroporo deserved their win. Their forwards played the better game on the day,' and their backs, as well as could be judged under foul conditions, had a shade the better of it, too. However, United defended soundly throughout, and profited in .one or two tight -spots by their opponents’ over-eagerness. Scorers: — Poroporo (6 points): T. Hotene and S. Paul, a try each. United (6 points): Kahui, a try; Gardiner, a penalty goal.

Exciting Motor-Cycling On Greasy Track At Saturday’s Race Meeting

Although once again dogged by bad weather, the. Bay of Plenty Motor Cycle Club held its race meeting on Saturday in the Showgrounds. Considering the weather, attendance was surprisingly large and so interesting was the racing that very few left before the final event had been decided, even though the rain was quite heavy by that time. Times (for the day were not fast, but what was lost in that respect was made up by the many spectacular spills and slides on the greasy track. The big race of the day was won by MacDonald, of Tauranga, on a K.T.T. Velocette —a well known rider in the Palmerston North district on the mile grass tracks in the prewar years. He gave the limit man almost two laps start and rode splendidly to overhaul G. Haeusler in the fourteenth lap and win- by 100 yards. Frank Cameron fell but remounted and finished third. The scratch man, Dixie Peap ? -from 135 secs., had the misfortune) ip break a petrol pipe when goin^’well arid thus robbed the event,of a’most exciting finish, • ; : : Two of the better:-know¥r' local riders were unfortunate in'that they met. with mishaps—Frank Cameron slid through -the -rails on the bottom end of.-the course, and Jack Marsh’s petrol tank split open.
