Whakatane Surf Club Getting Ready For New Season
There was only a poor attendance at the annual meeting of#,the Whakatane Surf and Life-Saving Club on Thursday night, and certain Club appointments were held over until the Club re-commences its season early in December. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr E. Wilson;, president, Mr A. R. Knights; secretarytreasurer, Mr C. A. Aitken, assisted by Miss M. Wilson; vice-presidents, Mrs Danks, Messrs H. G. Warren, C. H. Brebner, B. Sladden, T. Danks; Women’s Club Captain, Miss M. Wilson; women’s vice-captain, Miss C. Windley; Men’s Club Captain, Mr G. Gartshore'; vice-captain, Mr J. Maxwell; hon. auditor, Mr A.'Bridger; hon Doctors, all Whakatane Doctors.
A sub-committee was set up to arrange a Club dance at Ohope in November. Excerpts from the president’s report follow: “The year’s work was, to some large extent affected by the outbreak of Poliomyelitis, and many junior members who paid subsejaptions had a very short season. For the coming season the executive decided that these juniors would n!pt be called upon to pay another subscription. “The season ended with a membership of 12 senior active members and 3 financial junior members. This is not a large enough membership to provide patrols fully during every week-end and holidays, but it is hoped that in the coming season there will be many new members who will take a keen and ac : five interest in life-saving work, and thus enable the Club to maintain a full roster of patrols. The executive was depleted during the winter by the resignation of Mr- Stenhouse, and by transfers to other districts of Messrs McGill and Quigg. “Patrols were carried on as fully as possible, and in one particular instance efforts at a rescue were made at the western end of the beach, but the time factor was against the team. “A considerable amount of work has yet to be done on the clubhouse including painting. Unfortunately there is no bus service during the off season, and, with petrol rationing, transport has been Somewhat difficult for town members. “A new line has been received, but the new belt which has been on order for some considerable time has not yet arrived. The surf ski is being repaired by Mr Whitehead, and when completed will be a decided asset to the club. “The finances of the club are in a very healthy state, the balance at the end of the year being £llO 8s 3d. “Thanks of the club are due to Mr R. T. Morpeth for the use of a window for.- a display during on the occasidp of the Merchant Navy Day appeal;'and to Mr E. R. Marryf ■ the reel etc. ‘frQj&a- Ohope. Also to Mr- J. Patterson for 4be’"tise'-- of a window display tb: the ' general meeting,' and to Messrs Chapman and Haeusler for posters. Special thanks are due to Mrs Cobbe, who made.the very find pennant, also caps and sashes. The executive thanks all members, honorary and active, who showed strong interest and who gave willing help during the past season.”
