FURTHER ROCK BLASTING WORK IN PROSPECT

Harbour Board To Call Navy Again Rocks the Navy explosives experts could not blast out. of the Harbour entrance last time they were here because they were obscured, are now clear, and the Whakatane Harbour Board decided on Friday to ask the Navy Department to send a team down to make a further inspection and remove the rocks if possible.

Captain Carey, Harbourmaster, reported to Friday’s Board meeting that the rocks it was proposed to blast were now uncovered, and he thought that during this month or early next month would be the best time to get the job done. He reported very liltlfe 'silting of the channel, and undertook to take soundings at the wharves with a view to having any silting there dredged out, but he said he thought there was little just now. Discussion on possible silting at the wharves introduced the subject of the need for repairs at the Board Mills wharf, and the consulting engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, is to prepare a report on its condition and the cost of repairs. Mr W. Hunter said there would be big sawmilling operations in that locality soon, with consequent extra cargo going over that wharf, Which needed to be put in order to handle the anticipated business.
