Possible New Line Of Attack On Poliomyelitis
A possible new line of attack upon infantile paralysis is suggested by Dr A. W. S. Thompson, medical officer of health at Auckland, in a report' of investigations made in Auckland during the first nine months of the present outbreak. He suggests that the spread of the disease may be caused by dust-borne infection at school and in the home in the same manner as the eggs of the thread, worm and possibly in conjunction with them. “That the threadworm itself might be intimately concerned in the life history of the infantile paralysis virus may seem a fantastic suggestion, but it cannot be excluded on the grounds of speculation,” states Dr Thompson. “Sp far as I know the idea now put forward has not been considered before, and it at least deserves inquiry.” He adds that;, if the .suggestion turns ' out to be a really important factor, the whole policy- of preventing the spread of the disease may have to be ■ revised.
