In this free country of ours, thou shalt not: Repair thy house without a permit. Build unto thyself a garage for thy car. Import anything whatsoever from across the seas—nay, »not even a trifling gift for thy wife, thy daughter or thy concubine—without a permit. Purchase petrol on a Saturday or Sunday, save within restricted hours and for emergency purpose*--provided always that thou hast the necessary coupon or license. Do ought but very limited s* upping for thy household upon a Saturday. Work in thy holidays if thou art a member, of certain Unions. Work for thy living in the great majority of occupations without paying fees unto a Trade Union. Open a shop in a “co-operative” area. Set thyself up in business as chemist, petrol re-seller, etc., without a permit. Use thine electric radiator or hot water system in prohibited hours. Export any article for sale without a permit. Use timber growing on thine own property unless thou payest sales tax upon it. Sell thy house or thy farm for what thou considerest it to be worth In short, brother, you have to watch you’re not breaking the law when you pick a lettuce in your own garden. —Contributed.
