Whakatane Rifle Teams Score Well At Championships

Whakatane was well represented this year at the Waikato Smallbore Rifle Association’s championship shoot, held at Cambridge on Saturday. Two teams, one of Frontiersmen and the other of Junior Rifle Club members, made the trip, and although they failed to bring home any trophies, they made a very creditable showing, and all gained valuable experience in competition with some of the best shots in the North Island.

Junior Rifleman . Norman Judd, whose consistent shooting has put him at the top in the local club, just missed the honour of bringing home the Junior Championship, being headed off by J. Mace of Te Aroha, who scored 92, a margin of four points over Judd’s 88. The big event, the Senior Championship, drew 40 entrants. W. Nairn of Cambridge, with a card of 96, was the winner, closely followed by two local Frontiersmen, H. Mole 93. and E. R. Hunt 90. The team shoots were also closely contested and the local teams have no need to apologise for their efforts.

The Hinton Cup, for teams of five, was won by Cambridge 300, Whakatane 286 second, and Te Aroha 284 third, For the last event, a ten man team shoot, for a genuine old-time Musket, christened “Ben’s Battle Blunderbus,” the two local teams combined. Cambridge was again successful, 482, with Te Aroha 481, second, and Whakatane 452, third. During the afternoon, delegates of all clubs of the Association held a meeting, and plans to expand each local club were discussed. Arrangements for postal shoots were made, and indications are for a. busy and interesting year ahead for all members. Those making the trip from Whakatane were: Frontiersmen, Whittaker, Mole, Bathe and Coates. Junior Club, Miss A. Bathe, Miss C. Hannah, Riflemen N. Judd, M. Whittaker and R. Bell.
